जब नक्सली घटनाएं तेज हो गयी तो वन माफियाओं की चांदी हो गयी। विभागीय पदाधिकारियों का मानिटरिंग कम हो गया।अंधाधुंध जंगली पेड़ों की कटाई व जंगली जानवरों का शिकार होने लगा। इस तरह से नक्सली घटनाएं ,वन माफियाओं का आतंक ,विभागीय पदाधिकारियों की दृढ़ इच्छाशक्ति का अभाव,मेरे निकटवर्ती गांव के भोले भाले लोगों की नासमझी आदि ऐसे कारण थे जिसके कारण मैं उजड़ता चला गया ।मेरे आंगन व आसपास में पेड़ पौधों की हरियाली ,जंतुओं का कोलाहल, पक्षियों का कलरव कम हो गया। मैं सब कुछ देखता रहा । मुझे दुख तब होता था जब मैं यह देखता था कि मेरे आस-पास के गांव के लोग जिन्हें मेरी ज्यादा जरूरत थी, जिन्हें मेरा संरक्षण करना चाहिए था,उन्होंने चंद पैसे की लालच में मुझे उजाड़ना शुरू कर दिया ।उन लोगों ने ही माफियाओं को सहयोग किया। सौ-दो सौ रुपए में हजारों हजार रुपए की लकड़ी को काटकर बेच दिया ।मुझे बार-बार बस यही याद आ रहा था- कि मुझे तो अपनों ने लूटा गैरों में कहां दम था... इतना होने के बाद भी सैलानियों का आना एकदम से कम नहीं हुआ। पर्यटकों की संख्या थोड़ी कम हो गई । एक समस्या और आ गई। पहले रात में स्पॉट लाइट के माध्यम से सफारी कराई जाती थी। लेकिन तत्कालीन केंद्रीय वन व पर्यावरण मंत्री मेनका गांधी के आदेश के बाद रात्रि में सैलानियों को घूमने पर रोक लगा दी गई ।यह कहा गया कि स्पॉट लाइट का असर जंतुओं की आंखों पर होता है। अब सैलानी दिन में ही घूमते थे ।जब लूटपाट की घटना होने लगी तब पुलिस एस्कॉर्ट के द्वारा एक ही बार में 20 से 50 वाहन को बेतला पार्क में घुसाया और बाहर निकाला जाता था। कहते हैं परेशानी अकेले नहीं आती और ऐसा मेरे साथ भी हुआ। समस्या ही समस्या। चुनौतियां ही चुनौतियां। मैं अपने वजूद को कैसे बचाउं इसे लेकर मैं काफी चिंतित रहने लगा। जंगल उजाड़ने के कारण जब मेरे जंगल में जानवरों को खाने पीने की कमी हो गई तब वह गांव की ओर रुख करने लगे। हाथी सहित अन्य जानवर छुप-छुपकर किसानों के फसल चट करने लगे । अब यहां पर एक और समस्या पैदा हुआ ।अब ग्रामीणों का वन विभाग के अधिकारियों से टकराव शुरू हुआ। गांव वालों को यह लगता था कि जानवर वन विभाग के पदाधिकारियों का है।
