मैं हूं बेतला पार्क               

आत्म कथा -भाग 5 

 गांव वालों को यह लगने लगा था कि जंगली जानवर वन विभाग के पदाधिकारियों का है। फसल नुकसान की भरपाई के लिए  विभागीय पदाधिकारियों पर दबाव बनाया जाने लगा। यहां यह भी जानना जरूरी है कि जंगल उजाड़ने में वन विभाग के पदाधिकारियों की भी कम भूमिका नहीं थी .उनकी मिलीभगत से भी वन को उजाड़ा गया.मैं सोच रहा था कि जब लोगों ने जंगल उजाड़ दिया तो आखिर मेरे जानवर की भी तो पेट हैं ।आखिर क्या खाएंगे ?ऐसी बात नहीं है कि मेरे पास समृद्धि नहीं थी .मैं जानवरों के अलावा  आस पास के गांव वालों की भी जरूरतो को पूरा करने में सक्षम था । लेकिन मैं किसी के लालच को भला कैसे पूरा कर पाता? मैं यह भी मानता हूं कि जंगली जानवरों ने आसपास के गांव के लोगों को भी मार डाला !क्यों मारा ?यह आप समझ सकते हैं। जंगल के पेड़ पौधे व जंगल के जानवर को लोगों ने दुश्मन मानकर क्षति पहुंचाना शुरू कर दिया। कोई भरठुआ( देसी) बंदूक से मार देता तो कोई फाना लगाकर शिकार कर लेता ।जहर देकर हाथियों को  मारा गया। मेरे कई हाथी तो बिजली के तार की चपेट में आने से मर गए। ट्रेन की चपेट में आने से भी मौत हो गयी। वह बड़ा हृदय विदारक घटना थी।आप अंदाज नहीं लगा सकते ,जब चलती ट्रेन ने मेरे हाथियों को रौंद दिया था तो मेरे ऊपर क्या बीता था? जब किसानों के फसल का नुकसान हुआ , किसी व्यक्ति को जंगली हाथी ने मार दिया तो  मुआवजा मिलना चाहिए था .हाथी सिंह के रूप में चर्चित क्षेत्र के कई बार विधायक रह चुके बाद में वन पर्यावरण मंत्री बने यमुना सिंह (अब स्वर्गीय)जिन्होंने लगातार तत्कालीन बिहार के पटना विधानसभा में अपनी आवाज को बुलंद किया। उनके पहल पर मुआवजा का भुगतान शुरू हुआ। लेकिन भुगतान की प्रक्रिया काफी जटिल थी। इसके कारण  लोगों का रोष बढ़ता गया। लोगों की नाराजगी का खामियाजा मुझे भुगतना पड़ा।  भुगतान की जो प्रक्रिया थी उसके लिए पूरी तरह से जवाब देह विभागीय पदाधिकारी थे। मैं  बेकसूर था। इस मामले को गंभीरता से नहीं लिया गया। विभागीय पदाधिकारियों के लापरवाही के कारण भी मुझे काफी नुकसान उठाना पड़ा। ऐसी स्थिति उत्पन्न कर दिया गया कि लोगों को यह लगने लगा कि क्यों रहेगा बेतला पार्क? जब जानवर से हमें  नुकसान है तो ऐसे पार्क रहने से कोई लाभ नहीं?

 Autobiography - Part 5

The villagers began to feel that the wild animals belonged to the forest department officials.  To compensate for the crop loss, pressure was put on the departmental officials.  It is also important to know here that the forest department officials had no less role in desolating the forest. The forest was also destroyed due to their connivance. I was thinking that when people destroyed the forest, then my animal also has stomach  . What will eat for the last time? It is not that I did not have prosperity. I was able to meet the needs of the nearby villagers besides animals.  But how could I fulfill someone's greed?  I also believe that wild animals also killed the people of the surrounding village! Why killed? You can understand this.  People started destroying the trees and trees of the forest as enemies.  If a bharatua (indigenous) shot at him with a gun, he would hunt with a gun and elephants were killed.  Many of my elephants died due to electric wire.  The train also died due to its grip.  It was a big heartbreaking event. You cannot guess what happened to me when the moving train trampled my elephants?  When farmers lost crop, someone was killed by a wild elephant then compensation should have been received. Yamuna Singh (now late), who was a former MLA of the area, has been a number of MLAs of the area, known as Hathi Singh.  Raised his voice in Patna assembly of Bihar.  On his initiative, the payment of compensation began.  But the payment process was quite complicated.  Due to this, people's anger increased.  I had to bear the brunt of people's displeasure.  The departmental officials were fully responsible for the payment process.  I was innocent.  This matter was not taken seriously.  I also suffered a lot due to the negligence of departmental officials.  Such a situation was created that people started to think why Betla Park would remain?  When we are harmed by animals, then there is no benefit from living in such a park?
