भाग- 9

 रजनी हाथी की मौत का दर्द मेरे लिए भी असहनीय था। लेकिन कुदरत के फैसला को मंजूर करना ही था। पूरे दिन चंपा ने रजनी के पास किसी को सटने  नहीं दिया । जो कोई भी रजनी के शव के पास जाता था ।चंपा उसे दौड़ा देती थी।बड़ी मशक्कत के बाद चंपा को वहां से अलग किया गया ।और रजनी के शव को दफनाया गया ।रजनी के गम में चंपा बेचैन रहने लगी। बार-बार वह उसी जगह पर चली जाती थी जहां रजनी के शव को दफनाया गया था। उसका खाना पीना कम हो गया था। वह दफनाये गये स्थल की मिट्टी को खोदते रहती थी ।वह मिट्टी भी खा जाती थी। बाद में उसकी तबीयत बिगड़ गई। वह पागल के जैसी हरकत करने लगी अंततः उसकी भी मौत हो गई। अब बेतला में सिर्फ अनारकली व जूही नाम के दो  हथिनी रह गए थे। इन दोनों में अनारकली की सवारी करना लोगों को काफी पसंद था।  उसकी सवारी के लिए लोग अग्रिम बुकिंग करा लिया करते थे। इसका कारण यह था कि उसकी चाल बहुत मस्त थी। अपने पीठ पर सैलानियों को सवार करके हौले हौले कदमों से जब वह मेरे पार्क परिसर में घूमती थी तो सैलानी बड़े करीब से जंगली जानवरों को देख पाते थे। बाघ हाथी ,तेंदुआ सहित अन्य खतरनाक जानवरों के अलावे विभिन्न स्पोट तक हाथी के सवारी के द्वारा पहुंचा जा सकता था। जलाशयों के पास बाघ मिलने के ज्यादा चांस रहते थे। इसीलिए हाथी की सवारी के द्वारा आसानी से जानवरों को देखा जा सकता था ।वाहन से प्रवेश करने पर वाहनों की आवाज से जानवर को व्यवधान होता था, आवाज सुनकर झाड़ियों में छिप जाते थे। लेकिन ऐसा अनारकली या जूही की सवारी करने के बाद नहीं होता था। मुझे याद आ रहा है कई बार अनारकली व जूही की सवारी कर सैलानियों ने बड़े करीब से बाघ को देखा था।एक बाघिन तो बहुत लंबे अरसे तक बेतला में रही थी ।उसने अपना डेरा जमा लिया था। जो भी सैलानी हाथी की सवारी करते थे उन्हें वह बाघिन अवश्य मिल जाती थी। 1992 अजीब घटना हुआ । कोलकाता के कुछ सैलानी बेतला पहुंचे थे। सुबह हाथी की सवारी पर जंगल की सैर करने निकल पड़े। कुछ ही दूर जाने पर एक बाघ दिखाई दे दिया। जो पुरुष थे वे लोग तो हाथी के पीठ पर जमे रहे। उन्हीं के साथ एक महिला इतनी डर गई कि वह हाथी के पीठ से उछल कर नीचे गिर गई। बहुत स्थिति विकट हो गई, पर्यटक चिल्लाने लगे, महावत ने सूझबूझ से जान बचाई...

The pain of Rajni Elephant's death was unbearable for me as well.  But the decision of nature had to be accepted.  Throughout the day Champa did not let anyone close to Rajni.  Whoever went to Rajni's body. Champa ran her. After a lot of trouble, Champa was separated from it. And Rajni's body was buried. Champa started restless in Rajni's sorrow.  Time and again she went to the same place where Rajni's body was buried.  His drinking was reduced.  She kept digging the soil of the burial place. She also ate the soil.  Later, his health deteriorated.  She started to act like a lunatic, eventually she died too.  Now in Betla, only two arms named Anarkali and Juhi were left.  Among these two, people loved riding Anarkali.  People used to book in advance for his ride.  The reason for this was that his gait was very cool.  Riding the tourists on her back, she used to see wild animals from close quarters when she used to walk in my park premises.  Apart from other dangerous animals including tiger elephant, leopard, various spots could be reached by elephant ride.  The reservoirs had more chances of getting tigers.  That is why animals could be easily seen by riding elephants. On entering the vehicle, the animals were disturbed by the sound of vehicles, hearing the sounds and hiding in the bushes.  But this did not happen after riding Anarkali or Juhi.  I remember many times the tourists had seen a tiger from close quarters riding Anarkali and Juhi. A tigress had been in Betla for a very long time. She had her camp.  All the tourists who rode the elephant would surely get that tigress.  1992 strange incident occurred.  Some tourists from Kolkata had reached Betla.  In the morning, he went out for a walk on the elephant ride.  A tiger appeared a short time away.  The men who were men kept on elephant back.  With them, a woman was so scared that she bounced off the back of the elephant and fell down.  The situation became very difficult, tourists shouted, Mahavat saved his life with understanding ...
