 आत्मकथा भाग - 8

अपनी आत्मकथा में यदि मैं जंगली हाथियों के अलावे पालतू हाथियों का जिक्र न करूं तो शायद मेरी कथा अधूरी रह जाएगी ।इसलिए मैं आज उन पालतू हाथियों के बारे में भी बताना चाहता हूं ,जिस पर सवारी करना लोग आन बान और शान समझते थे । सर्वोच्च न्यायालय , उच्च न्यायालय के महामहिम न्यायाधीश ,कई राज्यों के महामहिम राज्यपाल, मुख्यमंत्री, केंद्रीय मंत्री, अलग-अलग राज्यों के मंत्री, फिल्मी सितारें या फिर अन्य सैलानी जो कोई भी मेरे आंगन में पहुंचे उन्होंने अपने मित्रों और परिजनों के साथ हाथी की सवारी कर मेरे पार्क का भ्रमण किया।इसलिए पालतू हाथी मेरे आकर्षण के श्रृंगार  रहे । लोग इन पालतू हाथियों पर सवारी करने के लिए लालायित रहते थे। हाथी की सवारी करने का मजा ही कुछ और था। वैसे तो हाथी की सवारी की शुरुआत 1982 से शुरू हुई थी ।लेकिन उसके पहले ही बेतला में गुमला से एक हाथी लाया गया था। जिसका नाम दिया गया था रजनीगंधा। बाद में तीन और मादा हाथी लाए गए जिनके नाम फूलों के नाम पर ही  जूही, अनारकली व चंपा दिया गया। इनमें रजनीगंधा जिसे रजनी कहा जाता था और चंपा में गहरी दोस्ती हो गई थी। दोनों साथ साथ रहते थे। साथ साथ चलते थे। 1986 के जून माह तक तो सब कुछ ठीक-ठाक चला ।लेकिन जुलाई माह में एक दर्दनाक घटना हुई। रजनी व जूही चरने के लिए मेरे पार्क परिसर में धुनिया पहाड़ की ओर गए। बरसात का मौसम था ।हल्की बारिश हो रही थी ।चरते- चरते चंपा पहाड़ी की ओर चली गई। जब रजनी ने उसे ऊपर देखा तो वह भी तेजी से उसकी ओर जाने लगा लगी ।लेकिन एक पत्थर पर जैसे ही चंपा ने अपने पांव को रखा , उसका शरीर असंतुलित हो गया । और वह पहाड़ी से लुढ़कती हुई  एक गड्ढे में जा गिरी ।जहां घटनास्थल पर ही उसकी मौत हो गई। इसे देख चंपा दौड़ते हुए गड्ढे के पास  आई। गड्ढे में गिरी हुई रजनी को वहां अपने सुड से उठाने का प्रयास किया। काफी प्रयास करने के बाद भी जब  चंपा , रजनी को नहीं उठा सकी तो उसने चिंघाड़ना शुरू कर दिया। उसे भी एहसास हो गया था कि रजनी अब इस दुनिया में नहीं रही।आप अंदाज नहीं लगा सकते ।इतना जोर से चिंघाड़ने लगी कि आसपास के लोग जमा हो गए । दोनों की इस दोस्ती को देख कर लोगों की आंखें डबडबा गई। चंपा के आंखों से लगातार आंसू बह रहा था । वह लोगों की ओर ऐसे देख रही थी मानो वह मदद की गुहार लगा रही हो ....

 Autobiography - Part 8

In my autobiography, if I do not mention domesticated elephants other than wild elephants, then perhaps my story will be incomplete. That is why today I want to tell about the domesticated elephants, which people used to consider riding on.  The Supreme Court, His Excellency Judge of the High Court, His Excellency the Governor of many states, the Chief Minister, the Union Minister, the Ministers of different States, the film stars or other tourists who came to my courtyard, they rode elephants with their friends and family.  Kar visited my park, so domesticated elephants are the adornment of my charm.  People were eager to ride these pet elephants.  The joy of riding an elephant was something else.  Though the elephant ride started in 1982. But before that an elephant was brought from Gumla in Betla.  It was named Rajnigandha.  Later three more female elephants were brought, named after the flowers, Juhi, Anarkali and Champa.  Among them Rajinigandha, who was called Rajni and deep friendship was formed in Champa.  Both lived together.  Walked together.  Everything went well till the month of June of 1986. But there was a traumatic incident in the month of July.  Rajni and Juhi went towards Dhunia mountain in my park premises to graze.  It was a rainy season. It was raining lightly. Charette Champa went towards the hill.  When Rajni saw her upstairs, she too started moving towards her fast. But as soon as Champa placed her foot on a stone, her body became unbalanced.  And she rolled down a hill and fell into a pit where she died on the spot.  Seeing this, Champa came running near the pit.  Attempted to lift Rajni, who had fallen in the pit, from his Sud there.  After much effort, when Champa could not pick up Rajni, she started chirping.  She too had realized that Rajni was no longer in this world. You could not guess. So much shouted that people around gathered.  Seeing this friendship of both, the eyes of the people were overwhelmed.  Champa's tears were continuously flowing from his eyes.  She was looking towards people as if she was pleading for help….
