 आत्म कथा -भाग 16

 आइए अब बात करते हैं बाघों के विषय में। बेतला में बाघ!.. शायद आप भी वैसे ही मेरा उपहास उड़ा रहे होंगे जैसा कई लोग कर रहे हैं। दरअसल मैं बाघों को लेकर उपहास का पात्र बन ही गया हूं। लोग मूड बनाकर आते हैं कि मेरे आंगन में बाघ देखेंगे, सड़क पार करता हुआ, सड़क के किनारे बैठा हुआ या फिर झाड़ियों में छिप कर आराम करता हुआ।लेकिन यहां बंदर को देखकर वापस लौटना होता है। कई लोग तो अपने छोटे बच्चों के जिद पर आते हैं कि बेतला में बाघ देखना है। और वे मायूस होकर लौटते हैं। मेरे आंगन में बाघ ढूंढने से भी नहीं मिल रहे हैं।बाघ रूठ कर अन्यत्र क्यों चले गए ,इस बारे में कोई नहीं सोचता। बाघों के मामले में समृद्ध रहा पलामू प्रमंडल आज बाघ के मौजूदगी को लेकर खुद एक सवाल बन गया है।इसके कई कारण रहे ।जिसका ज़िक्र में आगे करूंगा । फिलहाल मैं आपको यह बता दूं की बाघ के मामले में पलामू प्रमंडल काफी समृद्ध रहा है। उन दिनों जब पलामू  में बीहड़ जंगल हुआ करते थे सबसे अधिक बाघ पलामू टाइगर रिजर्व में ही थे ।मैं भी पलामू टाइगर रिजर्व के अधीन था, इसीलिए मेरे आंगन में भी बाघों का विचरण करना आम बात था। पलामू टाइगर रिजर्व की स्थापना के पहले बाघों का  अंधाधुंध शिकार हुआ। पलामू में इतने अधिक बाघ थे कि अंग्रेजों के समय में बाघ मारने वालों को पुरस्कृत किया जाता था ।जो कोई भी बाघ को मार देता था उसे पलामू कचहरी में पुरस्कृत किया जाता था। यह जरूरी नहीं था कि बाघ के मृत शरीर को ही लाया जाए बल्कि  उसके बाल, नाखून आदि को भी बतौर प्रमाण प्रस्तुत कर दिया जाता था तो उन्हें इनाम दिया जाता था। शिकार करने के लिए पर्मिशन दिया जाता था। लोग शौकिया शिकार करने के लिए जंगलों में भटकते रहते थे। और शिकार करते थे ।अंदाज लगाइए कैसा दौर रहा होगा। बिल्कुल कहानियों की तरह ..एक जंगल था ..एक राजा था.. एक दिन वह बाघ का शिकार करने के लिए निकल पड़ा ...। बाघों के विषय में कई तरह की बातें हैं । जो यह प्रमाणित करते हैं कि मेरे आंगन में बाघों का लगाव काफी अरसे से रहा। चुकि मैं पूरी तरह से सुरक्षित जगह बन गया था ।इसीलिए बाघ सहित अन्य जंगली जानवरों को मेरे आंगन में रुकना काफी पसंद था ।बाघ, बाघिन  से मिलने के लिए मेरे आंगन में आते थे। कई बाघिनों ने तो गर्भावस्था में मेरे आंगन में ही रुक कर शावकों( बाघ के बच्चे) को जन्म दिया...

Now let's talk about tigers.  The tiger in Betla! .. Perhaps you are also ridiculing me like many people are doing.  Actually, I have become the object of ridicule about tigers.  People come to the mood to see tigers in my courtyard, crossing the road, sitting on the side of the road or resting hidden in the bushes, but one has to return to see the monkey here.  Many people insist on the insistence of their young children that a tiger is to be seen in Betla.  And they return despairingly.  I can't even find tigers in my courtyard. Nobody thinks about why the wives got angry and went elsewhere.  The Palamu division, which has been prosperous in the case of tigers, has today become a question on the presence of tigers themselves.  For the moment, let me tell you that the Palamu division has been very prosperous in terms of tiger.  In those days when there used to be rugged forests in Palamu, most of the tigers were in the Palamu Tiger Reserve. I was also under the Palamu Tiger Reserve, so it was common for me to visit tigers in my courtyard as well.  The tigers were indiscriminately hunted before the Palamu Tiger Reserve was established.  There were so many tigers in Palamu that tigers who were killed in British times were rewarded. Whoever killed tigers was rewarded in Palamu court.  It was not necessary that only the tiger's dead body be brought but his hair, nails etc. were also presented as evidence, so he was rewarded.  Permission was given to hunt.  People wandered in the jungles to hunt amateurs.  And used to hunt. Think about what a time it must have been.  Just like stories .. There was a forest .. There was a king .. One day he set out to hunt a tiger….  There are many things about tigers.  Which proves that the attachment of tigers to my courtyard has been there for a long time.  Since I had become a completely safe place, that's why the other wild animals including tigers loved to stay in my courtyard. Bagh used to come to my courtyard to meet the tigress.  Many tigers stayed in my courtyard during pregnancy and gave birth to cubs (tiger babies) ...
